TYPES OF CEMENT USED IN INDIA

Cement is one of the key ingredients to make concrete. It is a binder- a chemical substance that sets, hardens, adheres to other materials, and helps to bind them together.

There are many types of cement. In this blog, we will be taking a look at the 6 most common types of cement, learn their characteristics and know in which specific area are they most required.

ORDINARY PORTLAND CEMENT(OPC)

This is the most widely used type of cement in India. It is produced by grinding clinker and gypsum. OPC is used in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures.

PORTLAND POZZOLANA CEMENT(PPC)

Portland Pozzolana Cement is made by blending OPC with pozzolanic materials such as fly ash or volcanic ash. Compared to OPC, PPC makes concrete more impermeable and dense. The long-term strength of PPC is also more than OPC and it is used in the construction of hydraulic structures such as dams, bridges, etc.

SULPHATE RESISTANT CEMENT(SRC)

This type of cement is used in situations where the soil or the water has high sulfate content. It is made by adding special ingredients to OPC.

WHITE CEMENT

As the name suggests, it is white and is made using raw materials that are low in iron and magnesium oxide. It is largely used in decorative works and has a high aesthetic value.

BLENDED CEMENT

This type of cement is a combination of two or more types of cement, usually OPC and PPC. It is used in situations where specific properties are required, such as durability, strength, and workability.

LOW HEAT CEMENT

This type of cement is used in situations where the heat generated during the setting and hardening progress can be detrimental to the structure and is made by reducing the percentage of tricalcium aluminate in OPC.
